Toughened Bends
Specialist Glass Products Ltd.
We supply bespoke glass products for an endless variety of applications. One of our specialist processes is curving or bending glass.
Glass curves come in 3 main types, annealed, toughened and laminated, although toughened curves can also be laminated together; and any combination of curves can be sealed into double glazed units.
Toughened bends
Toughened (or tempered) curved glass is produced from annealed glass which has been heated and then cooled rapidly. This introduces stress into the glass surface which strengthens the glass. Once subjected to impact or thermal stress, toughened glass breaks into small blunt fragments which reduce the possibility of injury.
Some of the applications for toughened curves are:
Shower screens, infil balustrade panels (such as the one in the photo) display counters, partitions, canopies, balconies, curved reception desks, as well as components for curved double glazing and curtain walling. Toughened glass bends are available in clear, low iron, Pilkington K Glass, tinted, pre-acid, painted, and sandblasted forms, and can be processed in the same way that flat toughened panels are, i.e. polished edges; holes; noteches; cut outs.
Heat soak testing is also available on toughened panels. Heat soaking is the process of testing already tempered glasses to reduce the instance of nickel-sulphide inclusions which are a cause of tempered glasses breaking under extreme thermal conditions.
Toughened curves, like annealed curves, can also be laminated together. This forms a toughened/laminated bend. Applications for toughened/laminated curves would be structural glazing, and roofing, where load/wind bearing or safety is an issue.
