The Project

Vision Arch is a specialist in architectural glazing. The team is well known for delivering bespoke glass installations across heritage, commercial, and residential projects. Their work often involves technically demanding jobs that create stunning visual results.

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh needed to restore and protect one of its historic glasshouses. Over the years, the original glazing had become weathered and no longer met modern standards for safety or performance. The challenge was to replace the glass without losing the character or clarity of the original design. Vision Arch needed a supplier that could deliver high-quality, custom-made glass panels that would perform well in the demanding environment of a botanical glasshouse.

Vision Arch turned to Specialist Glass Products (SGP) after previous successful collaborations. They knew SGP could handle the precision and scale required, and trusted our talented team to deliver both the technical quality and the attention to detail the project demanded. The decision was also based on SGP’s reputation for reliability and expertise in structural glazing for heritage projects.

The goal was to restore the glasshouse to its former beauty while ensuring it would offer excellent durability. The new glazing needed to maximise light, offer long-term strength and weather resistance, and blend into the historic structure.

What did we supply?

SGP manufactured and supplied 6000 plus panels of 6.8mm Pilkington Optiwhite™ glass, each laminated using Trosifol SentryGlas® Natural UV interlayer.

The glass was installed throughout the structure to provide exceptional clarity and protection. The SentryGlas® interlayer offers increased strength, UV stability, and durability. These features are all essential for a glasshouse exposed to temperature changes and high humidity.

Challenges and Solutions

Vision Arch needed a fast turnaround and precise fabrication to match the existing steel framework of the building. Each panel had to be cut and laminated to exact measurements. SGP’s in-house production team worked closely with Vision Arch to meet these tight requirements and keep the project running smoothly.

This laminated glass project was a detailed and time-sensitive job. The SGP team managed the process from cutting and lamination through to quality checks and delivery. Every panel was inspected to ensure optical clarity and perfect fit.

Working to the project timeline, SGP delivered all panels on schedule. The communication between both teams made a real difference, helping installation progress efficiently on site.

Results and Outcome

The completed restoration has given the glasshouse a new lease of life. The clear, strong glass not only enhances the structure’s beauty but also protects it for the future.

Vision Arch praised SGP for their consistency, quick response times, and the overall quality of the finished product. The success of this stunning laminated glass project has opened the door to further collaborations between the two companies.

"It was a privilege to help bring this landmark building back to life. Working with Vision Arch on such an iconic site shows what can be achieved when expertise and modern glass technology come together."
