With building material costs, disruption in supply chains and strain on cash flow rising following the pandemic and cost-of-living crisis, many construction companies, architects and designers will be seeking new trends in home design.

Home interior is constantly evolving in line with new and returning trends. However, with so many trends impacting residential design, which are the top designs to implement in 2023?

We have worked alongside property and interior experts to reveal the top ten residential design trends which are going to set the scene for Spring 2023 and beyond. Check them out below!

Biophilic design

As urbanisation continues to influence interior design, the relationship between design and nature will grow. Focusing on incorporating natural elements into home interiors, biophilic design can include plants and greenery, water features, natural scents, substantial amounts of natural ventilation, natural light and natural materials such as wood and stone. Alongside being a favourite for creating a calm and productive space, biophilic features can also enhance well-being, support health and promote stress relief – perfect for properties with office space.

Speaking on the rise of the natural interior, Lisa from Stylize Studio, comments: “Greens and olives are sparking up everywhere across major cities, making nature-inspired greens a prominent colour for 2023. Likewise, natural materials like rattan and wicker (organic, raw and natural) are taking over furnishings for the home.“

Natural lighting

Increasing the natural light within a home can create multiple design avenues, transform spaces and save energy, and stimulate positive emotional responses. According to the Building and Environment report 2022², natural light is fundamental to our visual perception of interior space. Furthermore, it’s the ideal time to consider incorporating more natural light as we approach spring and summer.

Our MD, Andrew Taylor, summarises: “Glass is a sustainable material and brings in lots of natural light, which is why it is a perfect material for designers wanting to implement more natural light within a residential project. A great way to incorporate natural light can include skylights or glass flooring to brighten up dark spaces where a window is not always possible.

“Likewise, adding glass balustrading on the side of a property can encourage people to open windows and doors, letting in natural light while being safe for children or pets. Similarly, indoor glass balustrading on staircases can open up smaller or dark spaces.”

Natural and handmade focus

As sustainability drives interior design throughout 2023, it’s no shock that naturalistic handmade textures, sustainable craftsmanship and organic shapes are set to become all the rage this year.

Ryan McDonough at Myjobquote.co.uk, the UK’s leading trades matching site, explains: “Handmade artisan goods are increasing in popularity this year with many people shifting their focus towards sustainability. Hand-formed textures add depth to décor and can help make the space more interesting. Smaller décor items such as mirrors, frames, and vases will be popular items for handmade textures. In some homes, larger furniture items will also be hand formed to create a unique and interesting appearance.”

Glass features

Whether opting for a glass staircase, kitchen feature, floor, balustrade, or skylight, implementing glass features can add a unique, sustainable and contemporary feel. Andrew says: “Not only is glass environmentally friendly and recyclable, but it also uses less energy than other materials.”

Furthermore, commenting on an upcoming glass cabinetry trend, Lisa adds: “We are now seeing reeded glass in many kitchen showrooms for cabinetry, especially in NYC and London.”

Earthy tones

Following the nature-inspired shift, the desire for earthy tones is set to become a winner in 2023. Ryan comments: ”Earth tones are a great way to bring more nature into the home.

This year, colours such as brown, red, cream, and pink will dominate the interior design space. These colours tend to be soft and provide a nice cosy feeling to the home. Moody colours will also use brick, creamy midnight blues, and blue-green tones.”

Curved design

Like the biophilic trend, natural curves are an ideal way to incorporate authentic aspects of nature-inspired shapes within a home and create a calm and relaxing environment.

With more time spent indoors and a focus on entertaining and socialising post-pandemic, curved furniture, such as sofas, is just one example of introducing soft curves to instil a relaxed environment.

Lisa advises: “Curves are the furniture range for 2023, especially kidney bean-shaped sofas.” Andrew adds: “As well as curved interiors, we expect to see more use of curved structural glass in both gardens and home features, contributing to a contemporary and sustainable home design. Popular applications include bathroom screens, curved stairways, balconies and glass partitions between rooms.”

Neoclassicism

Making a comeback in 2023, neoclassicism boasts a sense of luxury and formality. The interior expert from Myjobquote.co.uk, explains: “Neoclassicism focuses on symmetrical, highly-detailed lines.

This décor trend focuses mostly on sophistication and elegance without appearing too showy. Many homeowners now desire luxury and formality in the home, and this is where this particular trend will lend a hand.”

Re-use and recycling

As sustainability remains the foreword for 2023, curiosity about the origin of materials will increase, with prospective buyers and clients remaining eager only to use natural, eco-friendly materials, as well as quality pieces and antiques in their homes.

Lisa says:

“You can be savvy here and think how you can reproduce existing furniture, make do with what you already have, and reinvent homes accordingly. Mid-century and vintage pieces will still make traction, especially as we become more environmentally conscious and reuse old furniture.”

Extended outdoor living space

Since Covid-19, homeowners have been looking for properties with larger outdoor spaces or enhancing their current space.

Dr Sarah Bishop, Consultant Psychologist, comments: “Incorporating outdoor space into a home can provide numerous benefits, such as increasing living space, improving physical and mental health, and creating a more inviting and enjoyable living environment.

“An outdoor living area can be created by setting up a comfortable seating area in a backyard, patio or balcony. Outdoor lighting can also help create a welcoming and inviting outdoor space that can be enjoyed day and night. Furthermore, it can make a home more attractive and desirable, increasing property value.”

Similarly, the Director of Where Saints Go, Mark Wilman, advises: “A key trend for 2023 has to be opening up the back of the house and extending into the garden. This inside-outside way of living will also be extended to outdoor kitchens, elevating the humble patio and BBQ. Entertaining at home will remain popular throughout 2023, with many people forgoing meals out due to the high cost of living and instead opting for family meals and dinner parties at home.”

Architectural lighting

Well-executed architectural lighting incorporates natural and electric light layers and successfully combines art, design and electrical engineering. With the correct use of architectural lighting, designers can elevate indoor environments and transform the space of a home. As explained by Lisa from Stylize Studio: “Lighting has become more architectural, and it looks like sculptural and artistic pieces are on the rise. Replacing pendant lights, spheres, hoops, discs, pebbles, and bubbles are very much now in fashion.”
